Oceola Community Center Gym Courts Calendar

UPDATE REGARDING STREET SHOES:

Fall and winter weather brings all sorts of rain, mud, snow and salt that can damage the gymnasium floors. Street shoes are not permitted when using the courts. Please bring an extra pair of shoes to wear when using the gym space at the Oceola Community Center. Thanks for your understanding and patience!

ADULT CLINICS / CAMPS

 

Adult Adaptive Basketball Demo

Howell Recreation is partnering with UMAISE for Wheelchair Basketball. This event is open to everyone of all abilities. Participants will be learning how to use a sports wheelchair, picking up a basketball using the wheel, dribbling, passing etc. At the end participants will practice shooting and participating in a scrimmage. 

There will be 8 adult chairs and a mix of pediatric size chairs. Youth and adults will be on the court together, participating together. This registration is to account for the adult sized chairs.

Howell Recreation is partnering with UMAISE for Wheelchair Pickleball. This event is open to everyone of all abilities. Participants will be learning how to use a sports wheelchair, skills and drills, learning about the adaptations and participating in a game. 

There will be 8 adult chairs and a mix of pediatric size chairs. Youth and adults will be on the court together, participating together. This registration is to account for the adult sized chairs.

Pickleball Clinic Level 2 (skill level 1.0 to 2.5)

Tuesdays, September 16th - October 21st
4:00pm - 5:30pm

Join Coach Josh for 6 weeks to spruce up your skills! This course is designed for 24 advanced beginners/intermediate players looking to improve their techniques and tricks for pickleball! 

Prerequisite – Pickleball Level 1 or Equivalent Play

More intense instruction than learned in Pickleball 1:

  • Introduction to 3rd shot drop

  • Footwork

  • Slow play vs fast play

  • Placement of shots

  • Working with your partner

  • Suggest skills to work on

Cost: $80 (Resident) / $100 (Non-Resident)

Pickleball Clinic Level 3 (skill level 3.0 to 3.5+)

Thursdays, September 18th - October 23rd
4:00pm - 5:30pm

Join Coach Terry for 6 weeks to master your skills! This course is designed for 24 advanced players looking to improve their techniques and over all playing. 

Prerequisite - Pickleball 3.0 or Equivalent Play

More intense instruction than learned in Pickleball 2:

  • Strategy: Positioning, footwork, pattern recognition & owning the line

  • Technique:  Mastering 3rd shot drop, dinking skills, overhead smash, lobs and more

  • ​Patience in play

    Playing your opponent

  • Mixing up your shots

  • Suggest skills to work on

Cost: $80 (Resident) / $100 (Non-Resident)

Pickleball Drill and Play: 3rd Shot Drop (18+)

Saturday, October 4th - 9:00am-10:30am

Join Coach Terry and his team for an engaging Hour and a Half Saturday clinic focused on mastering the '3rd Shot Drop'—a crucial skill for elevating your pickleball game! This clinic is designed for players age 18 and up, specifically targeting advanced beginners to advanced intermediate players (2.0 and above).

What to Expect:

3rd Shot Drop Focus: Learn the technique for hitting this essential shot after the serve and return, aiming to land in your opponent's non-volley zone, also known as The Kitchen.

What to Bring:

  • Dress comfortably for movement.

  • Bring a clean pair of flat-soled shoes for the courts.

  • If you have a paddle, please bring it along.

  • A water bottle filling station and restrooms are available just outside the fieldhouse.

  • Don't miss this opportunity to sharpen your skills and enjoy a great day on the court!

YOUTH CLINICS / CAMPS

 

Karate for Kids (Ages 4-14)

This program combines two crucial courses into one, Sanchin-Ryu Karate & Self-Defense and Project: Secure Child (child safety).

Students will be trained with proven, age-appropriate techniques that are necessary for kids to protect themselves from attackers. This program is set in a fun yet structured, environment which will give your child a positive outlook on learning a martial art. Participants will achieve great self confidence and leadership through the physical techniques, mental strategies, drills and exercises they are lead through.

Uniforms are available, but not required.

Karate for Families (Ages 4 & Up)

A parent and child program for all ages! You must register each family member. Set in a fun, non-competitive and informative atmosphere, this program allows parents to learn alongside their children. Physical techniques will be instructed along with drills and exercises, to help you have a positive experience with your self defense education. Sanchin-Ryu will teach you how to use your whole body, rather than just certain muscle groups, so size and stature are not an issue. 

Uniforms are available, but not required.
