This year Howell Area Parks & Recreation is lighting up the City Park with 12 different classic holiday movie scenes, as well as Christmas trees decorated by local families. People will be able to drive around and view everything that is on display in the park.

Bad Santa Holiday Trivia at Aberrant Ales

(Must be 18+ to attend).
Grab your friends & family and join us Thursday, December 20th at Aberrant Ales for the first Bad Santa Trivia! Don't forget to bring extra cash! If your team doesn't like a question or can't answer it, you can pay $5.00 to choose a new one. Raffle prizes and a 50/50 raffle will also be going on during the event.

At the end of the night we’ll be making a donation to benefit The Humane Society of Livingston County. (Registration fee covers one adult beverage per player and an appetizer for the team. Other food and drinks will be available for purchase.)

For those of you who bag a buck during the opening day of firearms season in Livingston County, the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, Marion Township, and Anything That Moves want to help you earn your bragging rights at the 11th Annual Buck Pole!  Share hunting stories, enjoy the bonfire, and win great prizes at the BUCKet raffle!  For a $10 registration fee, you’ll be able to hang your deer and receive a commemorative 11th Annual Buck Pole prize.  You don’t need to have the largest buck to enter the contest either as we’ll also be awarding prizes for the heaviest buck, highest scoring buck, highest scoring buck (woman), widest rack, most unique rack, and youngest hunter to bag a buck (18 & under only).

RULES

  • There is a $10 registration fee to hang a deer.

  • Deer must be completely field dressed.

  • Hunter must furnish general area in Livingston County, time, and who shot the deer.

  • Points must be 1” or longer to be counted.

  • Spread shall be measured by the widest inside dimension of the rack.

  • No deer can be removed until all prizes are awarded.

  • Deer must be hanging by 8:00 p.m. on November 15th to be eligible for any prize. Weather conditions permitting. Should weather conditions require removal of the deer (temperatures over 50 degrees), the hunter must still be present at 8:00 p.m. on November 15th in order to receive any prizes.

  • Final decision of awarding prizes for deer will be at the discretion of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority Buck Pole Committee.

  • Awards ceremony begins at 8:30 p.m.

  • Only one prize will be awarded per deer. BUCKet Raffle Tickets are available to purchase for a buck each!

HEADLESS HORSEMAN 5K - 7:30PM

The 10th Annual Headless Horseman 5k & Monster Mile is ready to get everyone in the Halloween Spirit!  Be one of the many costumed runners who race through the streets of Howell at night and into the shadows of Lakeview Cemetery!  This year the 10K will not be offered due to safety concerns, however, we will be offering a Monster Mile & 5K bundle!  The race will start and finish on State Street (North of Clinton near Church St.) in Downtown Howell. Round up your family and friends and come dressed as your favorite Halloween character.  On-site registrations, post race awards, and refreshments will be held on State Street.  Awards will go to overall Men’s, Women’s, and Master’s.  Age group awards to the top three places in each age and gender category in the 5K (age divisions based on age as of October 27, 2018). 

New this year will be an exclusive post race brew available at Downtown Howell's Aberrant Ales. Runners (5K and 1 mile) who opt in will receive a voucher at check-in for one beer and commemorative glass (TO BE USED THIS NIGHT ONLY).

Deadline to register and be guaranteed a t-shirt is Friday, October 12th.

Doc May Memorial Melon Ride

Slow it down, and enjoy a 15-mile ride through historic neighborhoods, the McPherson Park Bike Path, Crosstown Trail, Howell City Park and Lake View Cemetery. This ride has become a Howell Melon Festival Tradition and is our way of celebrating the life of Doctor Pat May. The ride ends back at the Livingston County Courthouse for the post-ride, Howell Melon and Ice Cream.  The Family Ride is about half the distance of the full bike ride.

All registered riders will receive a route map and a commemorative
t-shirt (only guaranteed if you register by August 3rd at 11:59pm) and a bike drawing raffle ticket.

Cost: $30 (early) / $35 (after August 3rd) per rider for the full bike ride (Shirt and melon ice cream included)

The community tradition continues with the 41st Annual Howell Melon Run. This is one of the most scenic and beautiful run/walks through residential streets, historic Lakeview Cemetery, and Howell City Park. The race starts and finishes in downtown Howell. On-site registrations, awards, and refreshments will all take place on State Street. Bring the family to enjoy the Melon Roll, Tot Trot, Mascot Dash, One Mile Fun Run, 5K, and 10K.  The course is certified by USA Track & Field.   Make sure you register before August 3rd or you will NOT BE GUARANTEED a race shirt!

Mparks Virtual 5K

The mParks Foundation is hosting a Virtual 5K the weekend of July 21-22, 2018 to raise funds for local recreation and park opportunities. The mParks Foundation will split revenues 50/50 with the Agency that each runner chooses to support.

WHAT IS A VIRTUAL RACE?
A virtual race is a race that can be run (or walked) from any location you choose.  You can run, jog, or walk on the road, on the trail, on the treadmill, at the gym or on the track (or even at another race). You get to run your own race, at your own pace, and time it yourself. Your medal will be shipped directly to you.

PARTICIPANTS WILL RECEIVE:

  • Participation Medal

  • 5k Training Program (via email)

  • Healthier body 

  • Tax-deductible donation letter

EXTRA INCENTIVES FOR RAISING MORE FUNDS

  • If the runner raises $50: t-shirt

  • If the runner raises $250: sweatshirt 

COST FOR PARTICIPANTS

  • $30/person, plus the processing fee.

  • A family of four+ members can register for $100.
    (For each $50 raised by the family one member would earn the t-shirt. All would receive medals.)

Treasures in the Sand (Ages 10 & Under)

The Howell City Beach is full of buried treasure!  Kids are invited to bring their toy shovels and dig through a mountain of sand for gold coins and exchange it for prizes.  The treasure hunt is broken up by age groups. This event is free and registration is not required. Bring your beach gear and enjoy a beautiful Michigan summer day on Thompson Lake.  Park entrance fee will be enforced.  There is no registration for this beach event.

16th Annual Howell Independence Aquathlon & Open Water Swim

16th Annual Howell Independence Aquathlon & Open Water Swim

The Howell Independence Aquathlon is a unique, multi-sport event which includes a 2k Run, a 750m swim and a final 2k Run. The run takes place through the Howell City Park and beautiful Lakeview Cemetery. The swim takes place in Thompson Lake off of Howell City Park. We also have a one-mile Open Water Swim. The all-inclusive price allows you to participate in both events, or choose one. Deadline to register and be guaranteed a t-shirt is June 25th. 

The top 3 male and female in each age group will receive an award for the Aquathlon & the Open Water Swim.

Wet suits are permitted at the Aquathlon but for health reasons, participants should not wear one if the water is 78 degrees or higher. Check with a race instructor the day of the event for details on the water temperature.

Also for safety reasons, it is required that each participant wear a swim cap while in the water. Swim caps make it easier for event staff and water safety boats to see participants in the water.

Come check out the Countryside Veterinary Dog Park during our Dog Park Open House on May 12th!  During this event, anyone can come to the Dog Park with their dog and check out the park free of charge.  This event is free to all but all dogs must have the proper paperwork with them to be able to use the dog park (paper copy of dog license & proof of rabies, distemper, and bordetella shots).

Bike to School Day is a yearly event to celebrate the school commute and encourage more families to safely try out riding to school on one day each spring.  On the morning of the ride, the staff of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority will go around to the Howell Public Schools and count the number of bikes to see who wins the 2018 Bike to School Award!  Don't forget to wear your helmet!  The winning school will receive a trophy as well as a coupon code voucher for discount registration for August's Doc May Memorial Melon Ride.

The Howell Area Aquatic Center invites you to dive in for some EGG-sational family fun.  Forget the lawn, we’re hunting for Easter eggs underwater. Prizes will be awarded for returning the Easter Bunny’s ‘lost eggs.’  Some eggs will float for the little tykes, others will sink for those seeking a challenge.  Children will be grouped together by age and each age group will have its own hunt time.  Please bring a water proof basket or egg holder to store your eggs.  Age groups are: 0-3; 4-5; 6-7; and 8-12.  Please pre-register to guarantee your spot.  To ensure safety, parents must accompany non-swimmers and children under 48” in the pool.  US Coast Guard approved life jackets only, please.  Parents must remain within an arm’s reach of youngsters who are wearing life jackets.

Annual Splash & Dash Indoor Triathlon

This indoor triathlon takes place entirely inside the Howell Area Aquatic Center. Whether you are new to triathlons, or you are a seasoned veteran this event is for you, so come swim, bike and run indoors with us.  Scoring will be determined by the number of laps swam, miles biked and ran during each discipline which are timed for 20 minutes.  Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers in each men’s and women’s age group, and to the overall fastest man and woman.  

Competing age groups will be: 
7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; 15-18; 19-24; 25-29; 30-34; 
35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70+.

All early registrants will receive a race packet and T-shirt; please indicate shirt size when registering.  Those who register after Feb. 1 at 11:59 pm are not guaranteed a shirt.

Rubber Ducky, you’re the one!  Do you love rubber ducks?  Well grab your favorite ducky and head on over to the Howell Area Aquatic & Fitness Center for a fun-filled event celebrating the day the Rubber Duck was invented!  Come swim with over 4000 rubber duckies in this quack-tacular event!  Also be sure to join us upstairs for some fun ducky-related activities and crafts!

Enjoy this Aquatic Center tradition while taking a dip in the pool and sharing your wish list with Santa!  Have your photo taken with Santa and receive a holiday frame to display your memories.  Be sure to stop by our upstairs observation area.  It will be transformed into a winter wonderland with games and activities!  The price includes a 4x6 picture with Santa, a holiday frame, and a toy from Santa’s toy chest!  Ask about family pricing!

Rec the Halls is in Downtown Howell at The Hive Youth Services Center! If your family is looking to decorate a tree you may purchase one online or call our front office at 517-546-0693. Business trees are $50.00 and you may decorate them from November 25th to December 8th. Trees will be displayed until January 2018. Hurry and secure your spot, trees are limited! It is a fun activity and great marketing for your business!

We have exciting news! This year during Rec the Halls, our Howell Teen Center will be one of many drop-off locations for Toys for Tots. Bringing a toy is not mandatory or required! However, for every family that provides a toy/donation they will be entered to win a 3.5ft Lego Tree! Tickets will also be available for purchase at the door and the winner will be announced at 7:30pm. A portion of our proceeds will be going back to Toys for Tots!

To kick off the night, Santa will be arriving in style, provided by our very own Howell Firefighters. Families will have the opportunity to take pictures with Santa, participate in a fun holiday craft, play in a life size Toyland, write a letter to Santa himself, and the chance to visit our vendor booths for last minute gifts.

10th Annual Buck Pole

For those of you who bag a buck during the opening day of firearms season in Livingston County, the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, Marion Township, and Anything That Moves want to help you earn your bragging rights at the 10th Annual Buck Pole!  Share hunting stories, enjoy the bonfire, eat hearty food, and win great prizes at the BUCKet raffle!  For a $10 registration fee, you’ll be able to hang your deer and receive commemorative 10th Annual Buck Pole swag.  You don’t need to have the largest buck to enter the contest either as we’ll also be awarding prizes for the heaviest buck, highest scoring buck, highest scoring buck (woman), widest rack, most unique rack, and youngest hunter to bag a buck (18 & under only).
