HEADLESS HORSEMAN 5K - 7:30PM

The 11th Annual Headless Horseman 5k & Monster Mile are ready to get everyone in the Halloween spirit! Be one of the many costumed runners who race through the streets of Howell at night and into the shadows of Lakeview Cemetery. The race will start and finish on State Street (North of Clinton near Church St.) in Downtown Howell. Round up your family and friends and come dressed as your favorite Halloween characters. On-site registrations, post-race awards, and refreshments will be held on State Street.  Awards will go to overall Men’s, Women’s, and Master’s. Age group awards to the top three places in each age and gender category in the 5K (age divisions based on age as of race date).
Deadline to register and be guaranteed a t-shirt is Sunday, October 6th at 11:59pm.

Join us for a delicious dinner at Chemung Hills Golf Club for dancing and music, starring the Premier Big Band performing all their hits from the Big Band Era. Back by popular demand! If you joined us last year for our first event, then you know what a fantastic time we all had. With a new venue and a different atmosphere this year we expect an even greater event. For those of you who bag a buck during the opening day of firearms season in Livingston County, the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, Marion Township, and Anything That Moves want to help you earn your bragging rights at the 12th Annual Buck Pole! Share hunting stories, enjoy the bonfire, and win great prizes at the BUCKet raffle! For a $10 registration fee, you’ll be able to hang your deer and receive a commemorative 12th Annual Buck Pole prize. You don’t need to have the largest buck to enter the contest either, as we’ll also be awarding prizes for the heaviest buck, highest scoring buck, highest scoring buck (woman), widest rack, most unique rack, and youngest hunter to bag a buck (18 & under only). All deer must be scored by 8pm to be eligible for prizes.

We are partnering with local author Denise Brennan-Nelson to create a larger-than-life drive through experience for her new book Santa's Secret. Attendees will enjoy scenes from the book installed along the park drive along with lots of lights throughout the park. Each car will receive a copy of Santa's Secret and can listen to the author read it from a link on the howellrecreation.org website (coming soon). There will be a kick off on the first night with cookies, hot chocolate, and a special photo op with Santa Claus.

Slow it down, and enjoy this 15 mile bike ride through historic neighborhoods, the McPherson Park Bike Path, Crosstown Trail, Howell City Park and Lake View Cemetery. This ride has become a Howell Melon Festival Tradition and is our way of celebrating the life of Doctor Pat May. The ride ends back at the Howell Carnegie Library Lawn for the post-ride melon ice cream. All registered riders will receive a route map and a commemorative water bottle.

Proceeds from the ride will go to benefit the Parkinson's Foundation and the Howell Parks and Recreation Foundation.

17th Annual Howell Independence Aquathlon & Open Water Swim

The Howell Independence Aquathlon is a unique, multi-sport event which includes a 2k Run, a 750m swim and a final 2k Run. The run takes place through the Howell City Park and beautiful Lakeview Cemetery. The swim takes place in Thompson Lake off of Howell City Park. We also have a one-mile Open Water Swim. The all-inclusive price allows you to participate in both events, or choose one.  Deadline to register and be guaranteed a t-shirt is June 23. 

The top 3 male and female in each age group will receive an award for the Aquathlon & Open Water Swim. The 1st place male and female and 1st place male and female masters will receive a trophy as well.  

Wet suits are permitted at the Aquathlon but for health reasons, participants should not wear one if the water is 78 degrees or higher. Check with a race instructor the day of the event for details on the water temperature.

Also for safety reasons, it is required that each participant wear a swim cap while in the water. Swim caps make it easier for event staff and water safety boats to see participants in the water.

Celebrate Michigan’s Free Fishing Day on the shores of Thompson Lake! This catch-and-release, family-friendly event includes a pancake breakfast, fishing bait, and great prizes for kids 2-15 for the biggest fish caught that morning! All fishing licenses will be waived for residents who would like to fish off of the beach and cemetery shores at Thompson Lake. The park admission fee will be waived if you enter before 10:00am. Don’t forget your fishing pole! T-shirts will be given to all registrants who sign up by Friday, May 31st. Registrations will be taken in advance or on-site.

This indoor triathlon takes place entirely inside the Howell Area Aquatic Center. Whether you are new to triathlons, or you are a seasoned veteran this event is for you.  Scoring will be determined by the number of laps swam, miles biked and ran during each discipline which are timed for 20 minutes.  All participants will receive a medal. The overall & masters for male/female will be awarded as well. Competing age groups will be: 7-8; 9-10; 11-12; 13-14; 15-18; 19-24; 25-29; 30-34; 35-39; 40-44; 45-49; 50-54; 55-59; 60-64; 65-69; 70+.

All early registrants will receive a shirt, deadline to be guaranteed a shirt is January 28th, 2019. 

Early Registration closes on Friday, February 8 at 11:59pm.  On-site registration will open the day of the event.

This year Howell Area Parks & Recreation is lighting up the City Park with 12 different classic holiday movie scenes, as well as Christmas trees decorated by local families. People will be able to drive around and view everything that is on display in the park.

For those of you who bag a buck during the opening day of firearms season in Livingston County, the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, Marion Township, and Anything That Moves want to help you earn your bragging rights at the 11th Annual Buck Pole!  Share hunting stories, enjoy the bonfire, and win great prizes at the BUCKet raffle!  For a $10 registration fee, you’ll be able to hang your deer and receive a commemorative 11th Annual Buck Pole prize.  You don’t need to have the largest buck to enter the contest either as we’ll also be awarding prizes for the heaviest buck, highest scoring buck, highest scoring buck (woman), widest rack, most unique rack, and youngest hunter to bag a buck (18 & under only).

Cost: $10/deer
No registration is required for this event.

*All deer must be scored by 8pm to be eligible for prizes.

RULES

  • There is a $10 registration fee to hang a deer.

  • Deer must be completely field dressed.

  • Hunter must furnish general area in Livingston County, time, and who shot the deer.

  • Points must be 1” or longer to be counted.

  • Spread shall be measured by the widest inside dimension of the rack.

  • No deer can be removed until all prizes are awarded.

  • Deer must be hanging by 8:00 p.m. on November 15th to be eligible for any prize. Weather conditions permitting. Should weather conditions require removal of the deer (temperatures over 50 degrees), the hunter must still be present at 8:00 p.m. on November 15th in order to receive any prizes.

  • Final decision of awarding prizes for deer will be at the discretion of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority Buck Pole Committee.

  • Awards ceremony begins at 8:30 p.m.

  • Only one prize will be awarded per deer. BUCKet Raffle Tickets are available to purchase for a buck each!

The 10th Annual Headless Horseman 5k & Monster Mile is ready to get everyone in the Halloween Spirit!  Be one of the many costumed runners who race through the streets of Howell at night and into the shadows of Lakeview Cemetery!  This year the 10K will not be offered due to safety concerns, however, we will be offering a Monster Mile & 5K bundle!  The race will start and finish on State Street (North of Clinton near Church St.) in Downtown Howell. Round up your family and friends and come dressed as your favorite Halloween character.  On-site registrations, post race awards, and refreshments will be held on State Street.  Awards will go to overall Men’s, Women’s, and Master’s.  Age group awards to the top three places in each age and gender category in the 5K (age divisions based on age as of October 27, 2018). 

New this year will be an exclusive post race brew available at Downtown Howell's Aberrant Ales. Runners (5K and 1 mile) who opt in will receive a voucher at check-in for one beer and commemorative glass (TO BE USED THIS NIGHT ONLY).

Deadline to register and be guaranteed a t-shirt is Friday, October 12th.
