Learn to Swim & Dive

The Howell Area Aquatic and Fitness Center invites you and your family to join our “School of Fish” learn to swim program for children 6 months and up.  Our program emphasizes interaction between students, instructors and parents.  Students are placed into lessons based on ability, so the ages listed are to be used as a guideline.  Please call the Aquatic Center with questions regarding your child’s placement.  Classes not meeting the minimum enrollment may be cancelled with a full refund.  The hot tub will be closed during swim lessons.

November Swim Lesson Registration: Begins Thursday, October 11th at 9am


1. Parrot Fish (Ages 6 months - 3 years)

Spend quality time bonding with your child in our class specially designed to bring you closer together. Focus on safety, blowing bubbles, floating, kicking, entering and exiting the pool, and much more! Play and learn with your child as you explore the water together. Children must be at least 6 months old and are required to wear disposable swim diapers if not yet potty trained.

2. Queen Angel Fish (Ages 3-5)

This class is designed to build comfort and confidence in the water by introducing basic swimming and safety skills with assistance from an instructor. Students will explore the water by blowing bubbles and getting their head wet at the side of the pool, and combining reach and pull arms with straight leg kicks. Students will also wear and explore the water using a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket on safety day. Students must be at least 3 years old.

3. Lion Fish (Ages 4-6)

The Focus for this class is on skills requiring less assistance from the instructor to become more independent swimmers. Skills include submerging head while blowing bubbles, retrieving objects below the surface of the water, jumping from the side of the pool, gliding, and combined stroke on front using reach and pull arms, and straight leg kicks with face in the water for 5 yards.

4. Starfish (Ages 5-7)

Students in this class will begin to swim independently with little assistance from the instructor. Skills in this class include an introduction to rhythmic bobs, incorporating rotary breathing during front crawl, combined stroke on front and back for at least 10 yards, and underwater torpedo glides. Students will also be introduced to deep water with jumps from the side of the pool and from the diving board.

5. Blowfish (Ages 6-8) 

Students will focus on endurance and breath control, including deep water bobbing for at least one minute and  rotary breathing with a kickboard combined with front crawl and back crawl. Students will also practice surface dives, underwater torpedo glides, underwater swimming, survival floating, treading water, and diving from the side of the pool. All students must be able to swim independently and be comfortable in deep water.

6. Green Turtles

The focus in this class is on incorporating the breath control learned in Blowfish and the strokes learned throughout the fish levels to allow students to begin swimming longer distances using appropriate breathing techniques. New skills learned in this class include elementary backstroke, scissor kicking, and dolphin kicking.

7. Sea Otters/Sword Fish Combo

This combo class is designed to fine-tune all the skills and strokes learned in our “Learn to Swim” program. Students will demonstrate what they have learned while swimming longer distances, performing front and back flip turns, progressive diving from the side of the pool to the diving board, survival swimming, survival skills while clothed.  Water craft safety is also covered.
