Crosstown Kids Triathlon

Bring your friends and family to cheer on our young Tri-athletes (ages 7-17)  as they compete in this family-friendly and safe event.  Competitors will begin the triathlon in waves based on their age groups at our indoor pool, then bike along the Crosstown Trail, and run along a course set-up on the Howell Public School Campus.  This event is professionally timed and contains a professional transition area.  1st-3rd place finishers are awarded to each age group and gender.  Each participant must bring their own swimsuit, towel, bike, bike helmet, and running gear.  Check-in begins at 8:00am.  Sign up online via RunSignUp.  Cut off date for late fee is Friday, September 9th at 10:00pm.

Doc May Memorial Melon Ride

This ride has become a Melon Festival Tradition and is our way of celebrating the life and work of Dr. Pat May.  The course is a little over 14 miles long and highlights historic neighborhoods, the McPherson Park Bike Path, Crosstown Trail, Howell City Park, and Lakeview Cemetery.  The ride ends back at the Courthouse where melon ice cream inside a Howell Melon will be served.  All Riders will receive a route map and commemorative t-shirt and Hometown Bicycles will be on the course helping riders with bike repairs during the ride.  T-shirts are only guaranteed to participants who register before August 14th, 2016.  On-site registration does not guarantee a shirt.

The community tradition continues with the 39th Annual Howell Melon Run on August 19th. This is one of the most scenic and beautiful run/walks through residential streets, historic Lakeview Cemetery, and Howell City Park. The race starts and finishes in downtown Howell. On-site registrations, post-race awards, and refreshments (like melon ice cream) will all take place on State Street. Bring the whole family to enjoy all the special events including the Melon Roll, 1/4 Mile Tot Trot, Mascot Dash, One Mile Fun Run/Walk, 5K, and 10K. A security area will be provided for all runners during the race. The course is certified by USA Track & Field.  Sign up online via RunSignUp.  T-Shirt Deadline is August 12th.

Attention Runners:  If you register after Wednesday, August 17th at 11:59pm your bib and t-shirt will not be available at early packet pick-up.  You will be able to collect your race information on Friday, August 19th starting at 5:00pm during on-site registration located on the corner of Clinton St. and State St.

Treasures in the Sand

A trip to the beach doesn’t have to be all about suntans and swimming!  This July at Howell City Park, you can become a treasure hunter!  Kids of all ages will be hunting for buried gold coins in a giant mountain of sand at Thompson Lake.  Exchange the coins for fun prizes.  Please bring your own trowel or shovel to dig with.  No registration is required.  Valid park entry fees will be enforced.

14th Annual Howell Independence Aquathlon

The Howell Independence Aquathlon is a unique, multi-sport event which includes a 2k Run, a 750m swim and a final 2k Run. The run takes place through the Howell City Park and beautiful Lakeview Cemetery. The swim takes place in Thompson Lake off of Howell City Park. We also have a one-mile Open Water Swim. The all-inclusive price allows you to participate in both events, or choose one.

Wet suits are permitted at the Aquathlon but for health reasons, participants should not wear one if the water is 78 degrees or higher. Check with a race instructor the day of the event for details on the water temperature.

Also for safety reasons, it is required that each participant wear a swim cap while in the water. Swim caps make it easier for event staff and boats to see participants in the water. If a participant does not have a swim cap the day of the event, they will be available for purchase on site for $2.00.  

Late fee applies after 11:59pm June 26.  Age divisions are based on the age of participation as of December 31, 2016.  Check in begins at 8:00am.  Open water swim starts at 9:00am, Aquathlon starts at 10:00am.  Sign up online via RunSignUp.

Flip-N Flop Fishing Tournament (Ages 2-15)

Can you think of a better way to spend a Saturday? Fresh air, fishing poles, family, and pancakes!  Come join us as we take advantage of the Michigan’s Free Fishing Day when all the fishing licenses will be waived for residents who would like to fish off of the beach and cemetery shore at Thompson Lake.  Bring your pole and we’ll provide the bait and breakfast!  This is a catch and release event.  Great prizes will be awarded to kids ages 2-15 for the biggest fish caught that morning.  T-shirts will be given to all registrants who sign up before June 1.  Come early to get the best spot and create memories that will last a lifetime!  The park admission fee will be waived if you enter before 10:00am.  Registrations will be taken in advance and on-site.  Pre-registration deadline for a t-shirt is June 1st.

Due to weather conditions, Bike to School Day has been rescheduled for May 11th!

Kids love bicycling!  Bike to School Day is a yearly event to celebrate the school commute and encourage more families to safely try out riding to school one day each spring!  On the morning of the ride, the staff of the Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority will go around to the Howell Public Schools and count the number of bikes to see who wins the 2016 Bike to School Award!  Don’t forget to wear your helmet!  The winning school will receive a trophy provided by Hometown Bicycles.

The Howell Teen Center is teaming up with Tony Sacco’s to crown the 2016 Teen Pizza Master.  The Howell teens will divide into teams of two and each team will design/name a custom pizza that will be added to Tony Sacco’s Menu for a limited time.  The Pizza Master Crown will be awarded to the Team that sells the most pizzas!  For each custom pizza sold, the Howell Teen Center will receive a portion of the proceeds.  Join us and enjoy our tasty creations while supporting our center!  Visit Tony Sacco’s of Hartland between 5/1-5/31 to show your support!

Come to the most unique night-time springtime celebration in Livingston County for children ages 0-8.  This one-of-a-kind outdoor event begins with a fly-over by helicopter and a massive drop of thousands of soft, white marshmallows!  Then we’ll move on to a night-time Easter egg hunt (please bring your own flashlight).  There will be no on-site registration for this event.  All registrations must be received by Friday, April 15th at noon.  The event is limited to the first 1,000 registrants so register today!

Dive in for some EGG-sational fun!  Forget the lawn, we’re hunting for eggs underwater!  Prizes will be awarded for finding the Easter Bunny’s lost Easter Eggs.  Some eggs will float for the little tykes while others will be sinkers for those needing a little extra challenge.  Children will be grouped together by age and will have their own special time to hunt.  Please bring a waterproof basket or egg holder and a towel.  US Coast Guard approved life jackets only.  For everyone’s safety, parents MUST accompany non-swimmers under 48” tall into the pool.

Not sure what the weather will be like?  Rain or shine we’ll be hosting an indoor garage sale.  This is your opportunity to buy and sell new and used merchandise, clothing, and collectibles.  This year we’ll also be selling sports equipment to raise money for our sports programs!  Come buy gently-used equipment at a fraction of the price you’d pay for it new! Set-up starts at 8:00am the day of the sale.  $1 entrance fee to shop per adult (children 10 & Under are free).

Splash-&-Dash Indoor Triathlon

Come swim, bike, run in true Tri order!  Whether this is your first event or your motivation for the summer season, this is the triathlon for you.  Scoring will be determined based on laps swam, miles biked, and miles ran with each discipline timed for 20 minutes. Awards will be handed out based on age group for men and women.  Anyone age 9 going to age 99 can compete! All early registrants will receive a race packet and t-shirt, so please indicate your size when registering.  Late registrants are not guaranteed a t-shirt.  Deadline to register before a late fee is applied is Friday, February 19th.
