Do a little bit of Spring cleaning and donate any used purses or jewelry to the Howell Senior Center!  The Howell Senior Center will be taking donations for this sale from March 1st-April 30th.  Donations may be dropped off at the Howell Senior Center during our regular office hours.  Then be sure to visit us May 4th-5th for our Spring Sale!  All proceeds go to benefit the Howell Senior Center.  Who knows, you might even find your next favorite treasure!

Celebrate Michigan’s Free Fishing Day on the shores of Thompson Lake!  This catch-and-release, family-friendly event includes a pancake breakfast, fishing bait, and great prizes for kids 2-15 for the biggest fish caught that morning!  All fishing licenses will be waived for residents who would like to fish off of the beach and cemetery shores at Thompson Lake. The park admission fee will be waived if you enter before 10:00am.  Don’t forget your fishing pole!  T-shirts will be given to all registrants who sign up before June 1st.   Registrations will be taken in advance or on-site.  Pre-registration deadline for a t-shirt is June 1st.

Tiny Tot Olympics (Ages 3-6)

Oceola Township is the host site for this annual summer event favorite for kids ages 3-6 years old.  This year’s super hero theme focuses on early childhood development.  Kids will participate in teams and will go through a variety of fun, athletic and creative events at various stations.  Stations include lessons on catching/throwing, jumping, running, foot striking, creative arts, and brain games.  A chaperone is encouraged to participate with the child.  Don’t forget the camera for Tiny Tot photo opps!  All participants will receive a superhero cape for participating!  Pre-Registration is required on/before June 5th.  
Check-Ins are from 9:00am-9:30am.

The sun has been shining, the graduation parties are happening and those pesky cans and bottles just keep piling up.  Never fear the HIVE is here!  During the month of July we are going to help our community Reduce the amount of waste and help Recycle the cans and bottles for you.  What’s the Reward you ask? All the money collected will help fund our Teen Advisory Board’s youth conference they attend each year, after which, they return better leaders for our community.

15th Annual Howell Independence Aquathlon & Open Water Swim

The Howell Independence Aquathlon claims the longest annual event of its kind in Michigan.  The multi-sport event includes a 2K run, a 750m swim, and a final 2K run.  The course runs through Howell City Park and beautiful Lakeview Cemetery.  The swim portion utilizes Thompson Lake off the shores Howell City Park.  There is also an optional One-Mile Open Water Swim.  The all-inclusive price allows you to participate in both events, or your choice. Deadline to register for the Aquathlon and be guaranteed a T-Shirt is June 25th.

The Howell City Beach is full of buried treasure!  Kids are invited to bring their toy shovels and dig through a mountain of sand for gold coins and exchange it for prizes.  The treasure hunt is broken up by age groups. This event is free and registration is not required. Bring your beach gear and enjoy a beautiful Michigan summer day on Thompson Lake.  Park entrance fee will be enforced.  There is no registration for this beach event.

Join the community tradition of the 40th Annual Howell Melon Run on August 18th.  This is one of the most scenic and beautiful run/walks through residential streets, historic Lakeview Cemetery, and Howell City Park.  The race starts and finishes in downtown Howell.  On-site registrations, post-race awards, and refreshments will all take place on State Street.  Bring the whole family to enjoy all the special events including the Melon Roll, 1/4 Mile Tot Trot, Mascot Dash, One Mile Fun Run/Walk, 5K, and 10K.  A security area will be provided for all runners during the race.  The course is certified by USA Track & Field. Runners who register after August 10th are not guaranteed a T-Shirt.

Slow it down, and enjoy a 15-mile ride through historic neighborhoods, the McPherson Park Bike Path, Crosstown Trail, Howell City Park and Lake View Cemetery. This ride has become a Howell Melon Festival Tradition and is our way of celebrating the life of Doctor Pat May.  The ride ends back at the Livingston County Courthouse for the post-ride, Howell Melon and Ice Cream.

All registered riders will receive a route map, a commemorative t-shirt, and bike drawing ticket. The bike is donated, and may be redeemed for store credit at Hometown Bicycles.  You must register before Friday, August 11th to be guaranteed a shirt!

Come to the most unique night-time springtime celebration in Livingston County for children ages 0-8.  This one-of-a-kind outdoor event begins with a fly-over by helicopter and a massive drop of thousands of soft, white marshmallows!  Then we’ll move on to a night-time easter egg hunt (please bring your own flashlight).  There will be no on-site registration for this event.  All registrations must be received by Thursday, April 13th at noon.

Dive in for some EGG-sational fun!  Forget the lawn, we’re hunting for eggs underwater!  Prizes will be awarded for finding the Easter Bunny’s lost Easter Eggs.  Some eggs will float for the little tykes while others will be sinkers for those needing a little extra challenge.  Children will be grouped together by age and will have their own special time to hunt.  Please bring a waterproof basket or egg holder and a towel.  US Coast Guard approved life jackets only.  For everyone’s safety, parents MUST accompany non-swimmers under 48” tall into the pool.  You must register in advance - on-site registration will not be available.

Due to us losing power in our buildings last week, we have rescheduled our annual Spring Indoor Garage Sale!  Because of the new date, there are a few openings left but they will be taken on a first-come first served basis.  This is your opportunity to buy and sell new and used merchandise, clothing, and collectibles.  Space is limited.  No furniture please.  There is a two table maximum per family.  Set-up starts at 8:00am the day of the sale.  Reserve a table or come and shop.  $1 entrance fee to shop per adult (children 10 & Under are free).

Come swim, bike, run in true Tri order!  Whether this is your first event or your motivation for the summer season, this is the triathlon for you.  Scoring will be determined based on laps swam, miles biked, and miles ran with each discipline timed for 20 minutes.  Awards will be handed out based on age group for men and women.  Anyone age 9 going to age 99 can compete!  All early registrants will receive a race packet and race shirt, so please indicate your size when registering.  Late registrants are not guaranteed a race shirt.  Deadline to register and be guaranteed a shirt is Friday, February 10th.  Sign up online via RunSignUp.  The last heat will be a team relay (2-3 people).

Join us at Howell City Park for our Movies Under the Stars!  We'll be showing a free movie every other week.  On June 19th we will be showing Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day sponsored by Community Bible Church!  Free popcorn and water will be provided. There will also be a balloon artist, face painting, and a lively game of 9 square! Bring a picnic dinner and come have fun with us! Activities start at 7:00pm; movie starts at dusk. Be sure to bring a chair or blanket, bugspray, and most importantly, your friends and family!  Movies start at dusk (typically between 9:00pm -9:30pm). Flip N Flop Fishing Tournament

Can you think of a better way to spend a Saturday?  Join us for a day of fresh air, fishing poles, family, and pancakes!  We will be taking advantage of Michigan's Free Fishing Day when all fishing licenses will be waived for residents who would like to fish off of the beach and cemetery shore at Thompson Lake.  Bring your pole and we'll provide the bait and breakfast!  This is a catch and release event.  Great prizes will be awarded to kids 2-15 for the biggest fish caught that morning (courtesy of J&B Bait and Tackle).  T-shirts will be given to the first 100 people who preregister.  Registrations will be taken in advance or on-site.  Come early to get the best spot and create memories that will last a lifetime!  Park entrance fee will be waived if you enter before 10:00am.

The Prowling Cougar 5K & 1 Mile Run/Walk

The Prowling Cougar is a fun 5K & 1 Mile Run/Walk event that will help raise money so that Cleary University's Cross Country Team can travel to National's to compete this year. Proceeds will also help support activities in the transfusion area at the University of Michigan Women's and Children's Center.

Tiny Tot Olympics

World records could be broken at the Tiny Tot Olympics here in Howell!  While we won't be keeping any official scores, children ages 3-6 will be hopping, jumping, skipping, and racing at the Oceola Community Center's soccer fields!  Teams of 10 will wear brightly colored t-shirts (included in the registration fee) and will rotate between a myriad of active and engaging stations with a dynamic group leader who will help them compete individually and as a team.  All children will receive a participation medal at the closing ceremonies.  Everyone involved is sure to have plenty of fun, fellowship, and physical activity.  Parents are encouraged to bring a camera.  Water and a snack are included.  The event is limited to the first 100 children so sign up today!

Guppy Ball: Kids Water Polo (ages 5-18)

In this version of water polo the rules have been modified to allow for a fun and safe environment for new water polo players.  Games will be played in the shallow end of the pool for the younger kids and deep water for older kids.  Players will be able to use flotation, touch the floor, catch and pass the ball with two hands, and there will be no contact between players.  Game rules, strategies, and team work will be discussed and the remaining time will be for game play.  Players will be divided into groups of similar ages.

Bike to School Day

Kids love bicycling!  Bike to School Day is a yearly event to celebrate the school commute and encourage more families to safely try out riding to school on one day each spring.  On the morning of the ride, the staff of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority will go around to the Howell Public Schools and count the number of bikes to see who wins the 2015 Bike to School Award!  Don’t forget to wear a helmet!  The winning school will receive a trophy provided by Hometown Bicycles!

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority is proud to offer a themed event once a month for our friends with special needs.  This week we'll be going swimming at the Howell Aquatic and Fitness Center!  We will have a highly-trained swim instructor to help with swimming and therapy techniques.  A group activity will be offered in the last portion of the swim.  Wheel chair access is available.  Participants should be accompanied by a family member or caregiver.
Cost: $3 per participant/free for parents and caregivers.

Underwater Easter Egg Hunt

Dive in for some EGG-sational fun!  Forget the lawn, we’re hunting for eggs underwater!  Prizes will be awarded for finding the Easter Bunny’s lost Easter Eggs!  Some eggs will float for the little tykes while others will be sinkers for those needing a little extra challenge.  Children will be grouped together by age and will have their own special time to hunt.  Please bring a waterproof basket or egg holder and a towel.  US Coast Guard approved life jackets only.  For everyone’s safety, parents MUST accompany non-swimmers under 48” tall into the pool.  You must register in advance - there is no on-site registration.

Since we tend to be on the NERDY side at the Howell Parks & Rec, we have decided to celebrate!  This year is an extra special Pi Day as it falls on 3.14.15 and we’ve decided to celebrate all things Pi...well, more like PIE!  Join us in downtown Howell for the official NERD HERD PUB/GRUB CRAWL and don’t forget to dress the part!  During the evening, we will also be giving you the chance to PIE US!  $1 will give you the ability to throw a pie at us and for $5 you can smash it in our face.

Hoop Shoot & Free Throw Contest

Athletes in 1st-6th grade will test their basketball shooting skills by making as many baskets as they can from predetermined locations on the court in one minute.  Then, they will compete in a free throw contest where they will have one minute to see how many free throws they can make!  Athletes will compete based on their gender and grade level.  We’ll present awards to the top 3 finishers in each contest based on age and gender!
